Bir cümleği noun clause şeklinde sanki bir isim gibi özne veya olarak veya bazı fiillerin tümleci olarak kullanabiliriz. Böyle cümleler genellikle that ile yapıldığından that-clause diye adlandırılır.Fakat thatden başka yapılar da kullanılabilir.

A) Object: Aşağıdaki örneklerde that cümleciği nesne durumundadır.

I think (that) it will train tomorrow.

Can you guarentee (that) she'll pay the money back?

He believed (that) I was right

B) Subject:

That he is too old is obvious.

That you do a lot of sport makes you healthy.

Bu şekilde özne uzun olduğu için,that cümleciği yerine it özne olarak kullanılıp,cümle sonunda itin yerini tuttuğu cümlecik belirtilebilir.

It is obvious that he is too old.

It makes you healthy that you do a lots of sport.

C) Aşağıdaki örneklerde olduğu gibi,bazı sıfatlardan sonra kullanılabilirler.

I'm pleased (that)he often helps me.

Are you surprised (that)he is very late today.

D) Aşağıdaki örneklerde olduğu gibi,bazı soyut isimlerle kullanılabilirler.

The fact that the world is round is obvious today.

I don't like the belief that there are ghosts.

E) "that" kullanmadan soru kelimesiyle de yapılan cümlecikler özne veya nesne olarak kullanılabilirler.

I don't know why he is late.

What you have done doesn't interest me.

Where he lives is unknown for people.

A glass of cold water is what I need now.

What Tom is doing now is(to) sleep.

Burada dikkat edilmesi gereken,bu cümleciklerde soru yapısı değil,düz yapı var.(e.g. I don't know why is he late.değil.)

F) "if" veya "whether" kullanarak yapılan cümlecikler de hem özne, hem nesne olarak kullanılabilir.

Nesne:

I wonder if / whether he's passed the exam.
(Sınavı geçip geçmediğini merak etmiyorum.)

Özne:

Whether he's passed exam is still unknown.
(Sınavı geçip geçmediğini hala bilinmiyor.)

Veya bu cümlede özne yerine it kullanırsak:

It is still unknown if / whether he's passed the exam.

Whether ile or not ifadesi de kullanılabilir.

I wonder whether or not he's passed the exam.

I wonder whether he's passed the exam or not.

1. aggree,arrange,demand,decide,order,recommend,urge, insist,susgest fiillerinden sonra that+özne+should yapısı da kullanılabilir.


I insisted(that)she should take the money.

He recommends(that)I should see the doctor.

2. Suprised,sorry,shocked,interesting gibi his belirtilen sıfatlardan ve important,essential gibi sıfatlardan sonra da that + özne + should yapısı da kulanılabilir:

I was suprised(that)she should finish the school.

I'm sorry(that) he should feel ill.

It important(that) we should arrive on time.

3. Yukarıdaki ifadelerde çekimsiz fiil de kullanılabilir:

I insisted (that) she take the money.

They aggreed (that) I be wrong.

I was surprised (that) she finish the school.
